Steve Lytle dedicated his life to serving others through fire and emergency services. For more than 20 years, he protected communities as a battalion chief at the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department and as Fire Chief of the Crooked Creek Fire Department. Beyond his service in the field, Steve found joy and purpose in teaching at the NC Fire Academy at McDowell Technical Community College, where he poured his heart into training the next generation of firefighters and first responders. He also loved the mountains he called home, finding peace, strength, and joy in their beauty. Steve was known not only for his skill and leadership, but also for his compassion, mentorship, and care for every person he met. By establishing this scholarship, his family hopes to honor Steve’s legacy and ensure that his commitment to public safety lives on through students who will continue his work with excellence, integrity, and compassion.
