Cain Scholarship encourages students to persevere to complete an education.

This scholarship was established to honor the memory of our dear co-worker, Wingate Cain, III who passed away on November 9, 2021.

Wingate was a McDowell County native who dedicated his professional life to helping the underserved and believed education is the way to provide opportunities for a successful, stable life. He worked at McDowell Tech for over nine years, serving in the Admissions Office and then as the Director of the Student Enrichment Center. Wingate was at his best when working one on one to encourage a student to continue the educational journey. His goal was to provide guidance that would enable a student to see how he/she could be successful in education beyond high school. This scholarship has been established to provide financial support for a McDowell County student at McDowell Technical Community College. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, books and fees and the recipient must maintain a 2.5 grade point average during that first year.

It was Wingate’s hope that this scholarship would provide for a student who is determined to complete an education, showing perseverance and service to others.
